It took G.Rag y los Hermanos a whole four years to produce this their seventh album. You often read something like that. And then you imagine the band vegetating day and night in some dark basement studio for four years in a row. Several producers are worn out, millions and millions of Euros are burned: For a Steinway grand piano, and a football helmet full of cottage cheese. There is speculation about the financial ruin of the record company, and health is also perdu: vitamin D deficiency, damaged ears and in some cases schizophrenia. Okay. It was not that bad. But it took a few attempts until Wacky Tobacky finally stood there as it does now. And the band owes it to their captain G.Rag, who brought the band back on the right course.
Wacky Tobacky: The darned 7th album
And again, as clichéed as it sounds, the course that Captain G.Rag took was: Back to the beginning: That's why you could have called the album "Back to Tijuana", because the fragile, insecurely charming first album of the band Radio Tijuana was a bit of a godfather. That's why Wacky Tobacky is more crunchy than its predecessors and closer to its debut. The fact that G.Rag alias Andreas Staebler for the first time also acts as producer plays a role here: He likes it trashy, reduced, simple and preferably in mono. He has already gained experience as a producer with Leonie Singt, his own g.rag / zelig implosion and most recently with the Hochzeitskapelle, the newest playground of the Acher brothers.
Hermanos Patchekos: Kings of elegant reference
Even though it sounds much rougher on Wacky Tobacky, the basic recipe remains the same. Our favourite Mediterranean Trash Orchestra is poaching again worldwide in all genres, but continues to indulge in its favourite themes of cumbia, swing, waltz and punk rock. And of course great compositions, which the Patchekos cheekily adopt like no other band: Moondog (Paris, Paris), Captain Beefheart (Abba Zaba), Saccharine Trust (A Human Certainty) and band-intimus Delaney Davidson. That it worked out after all, with the damned 7th album, is a great joy for the band and their own Gutfeeling label, because after all the "Hermanos are the mothership" as Captain G.Rag says. Of course they have to set sail from time to time, explore foreign coasts, make friends all over the world...
